| Description: | Steve Pagliucia part owner of Celtics and candidate for US Senate 10/18/09 |
" Most for a total with the Eddie Andelman -- online and on demand. Listen to early Sunday night seven attendant on Boston talk evolution might be six we'll --"
" Right now we have a special guest -- and I'm known as a Republican I'm basically conservative I voted for Democrats here -- there. But here's 1 I am really going to support it had nothing to do with his ownership in the great job they've done the Celtics it has everything to do with. Needing some. Business people. In congress and having said that I wanna welcomes the value got two I stations Steve thanks for giving us some time. Yeah well at Tekzilla patriots won 59 to nothing how unhappy can -- be."
" But that's quite a -- as one of the biggest margin ever."
" Yeah and of course the Celtics toyed today which make you happy. With Toronto I think as Bono will be a very good team this year."
" Now I agree it's so they have a really good at this. This deepest teams since we've been with the franchise where Rex says about this season."
" Well I see you wanna talk a little politics with fuel. The one thing I've noticed. Over the last couple of years. And that is. You know Bonnie frank is in the air and Chris Dodd -- whole bunch of people had a very important committees to the future of this country. Yet none of them a business people none of them have any business experience. And I am now of the mind looking at the condition of the country. We've got to have people India that that is senators and congressmen and even the president can rely on. And get the right information. And that just doesn't seem to be any business people."
" I couldn't I couldn't agree more. The reason that I -- I jump into the race. Was that you know we -- and near -- financial meltdown about a year ago. And the aftermath of that has been we've bought the 100000 jobs here in Massachusetts over the last year. And part that is. Is the fact that we really need. I have someone who understands the -- of the business how to build businesses. Out of added it's sustainable jobs in Massachusetts and throughout the country. And with a great work for we have here and the dominance. In the industries such is life sciences its financial services. We should be in that condition these -- more than numbers I've been out. Around the state talking to people and I can't tell you. The anxiety about jobs people of job losses there health care cost. It's been a tragedy and I would jump in and try to change that."
" I -- I don't put words in your mouth but. Are you saying that basically. You made enough money to take care you -- your family and I would like to do something as -- thank you is that does that it."
" Well I've been -- I've been I've been really -- for example of the American dream you know my grandfather. Came from Italy and a paragraph I can't really. He worked at a shoe factory floor my father fought in World War II it was gonna be a permanent army evidently sent to Korea. There to be on the front lines twice she became a salesman. And my mother. Herself through school and and while I was actually grown up and became a teacher. Outside I've become. Financially secure. But really it's important as he said he -- business people down there. As you know I've the community as well with a -- site who tragically children. These are some of that but this case is out there the -- I -- even worse for them. So so I think it is time to get back. And I am ready to do that and I can do that for the people messages in this country."
" Steve I have been on the opinion. And I've been around here all my life that now one of the troubles. You know with the state. I am with the federal government is that the run business people and then things like the Big -- happen. Or inexperienced people take over certain -- of government. And they're really not equipped to end of somebody said to me Eddie and what did you take out my appendix I think on the floor would no way to begin that would know what to do. And I think that's the situation that you -- And that I I think that you to meet you proven. What you've done with the Celtics. You've made the Celtics into a top franchise. And it in no matter what everybody thinks it's a business. And -- the business of professional basketball professional sports."
" Guys I think I eight I activity corporate like never take your any doubt pressure. But what I can do is. I've been venture capitalist for twenty years and consultant in fact. It involves this many medical companies hospital companies. Pharmaceutical companies the whole gamut. And building businesses. So I know how to do that and and and the I think the issue is. You've got to be on the ground for a level so when you pass laws. They've got a really relates to fundamental principles on the ground not not -- 2000 feet up in the air."
" But when when Bain Capital looks and the deal. They have to do a lot of studying a lot of figuring. And a lot of planning. And that's what venture capitalists still remain in the end I think really the ones that create jobs. That somebody invented flat screen TV you know somebody made breaking into would change. I mean it's really the people that tool all these things that create the jobs. And -- our focus has not that and Steve you know -- the open -- can tell -- We've lost a shoe industry here we lost the leather industry we're losing a lot to Silicon Valley. And it's basically because. Again. State federal government doesn't have. Business people they have a lot of academics. And academics and nice people let it out I mean I could remember myself I'm an MBA yeah look what to school listening to some of these offenses I'm cinema itself. They don't understand real estate themselves and teaching a course simulating that understands that."
" Well it's interesting any in this in this state law of the three point one million jobs. 651000. -- study shows 600 to 1000 came from venture capital backed companies. They're actually -- it is critical. Two to find those ideas and -- those businesses and the nice thing about it is. Those -- kind of jobs that will create other jobs and that the jobs that won't go away I don't think we're gonna get textile back. But what we can do is capitalize on the great entries we have we're the leader of life sciences. And medical services and hospitals. We can we can put together we have a plan on our website. On had a we have public private partnerships. And an investment. To put facilities. And work with business. Government labor to create these jobs and create this situation. Where we dominate the life sciences and we keep it here we grow it."
" I know one of your opponents very well and I -- a lot of respect for -- But the problem miss -- there again. Is. A lawyer up and I don't know what the percentages of lawyers power in the congress. But I'll venture to say it's over 80%."
" If if if -- the big it's a big number. You know you know cut that was two thirds of people I think lift themselves. As -- career politicians are lawyers. And I think we -- some balance in there and having having someone who's worked in the global economy is built businesses. Who understands the struggles you know of of working people and businesses they're trying to build I think very report."
" Steve how did this come about because I think Jack take us back a little bit -- when people first heard that the owner of the Celtics was gonna run. Foreign Ted Kennedy's they can senatorial seat was it was a little bit of a surprise but have you always had political aspirations."
" Well yes you know I've always been involved in the community -- last ten years I've helped build the necessary particularly children and so largest. At a nonprofit agency that helps skid this 600 strong. And we at 7000 cases abuses in Massachusetts. I think that the worst type of thing. And we're working out -- stop it the economy makes it even worse because don't have jobs there's more stressed is more abuse is more problems. We've also built the Boston Celtics shamrock foundation on the president of that dealership group isn't that -- in one piece that but it helped lead an effort. Two have facilities by the community and we've raised over for a million dollars that we support. Homes that would would be disadvantaged children to get them home housing. To help in the Children's Hospital. So it was a involvement in -- this was a natural point. For me to say that say look these kinds skills are really needed. And obviously put politics is about port Massachusetts had been taken lightly. But I said I says these powers you know not to jump in because there really is no one. That has this has skills that. -- can move the needle in and get as to where we need to be -- turn this thing around we cannot afford to lose more got a last night 200 jobs last month alone. We can afford it anymore as a whole sure for this economy is to bring jobs back if we don't bring aspect you know deficits will grow but -- the dep has already. You guys commemorative events across the trillion that the national debt. In the early eighties and that was a big deal back that. That your mortgage -- future. -- the national debt is caught in now thirteen trillion. It's exactly -- side of about the GDP was about thirteen trillion so it's a scary number and we have to do this for our children and their children. We've got to get rid of the burden the only way to do that is. It creates sustainable. Growing job base. And I've been on the field doing now my whole life and it's like I compels it to run -- to try to do that for the people."
" Well save I mean and John Kerry is now the senior senator to Massachusetts. And if you win and I hope you -- he'll be the junior senator. I am and I'm hoping and the mother isn't gonna vote fly and I am gonna send you checked. Is I'm hoping -- trying get on the finance committees somehow."
" I'm very close to do to -- period and then try to help him with a number of things and he's got in recognition is going on. He he -- senior senator very bright person. Who's always done the right thing and a veteran so I work with them closely uptight about those those kinds of committees that really. Make a difference and I'll work -- to try this they'd do that. -- let people vote to be very tough to get a championship the Celtics you know we we we we we we were the the second worst franchises the other league. And we won the championship through I think the same kind of principles five your planned. About improving the team focusing on that improvement investing in players investing in our. Scoreboard there are facilities for our fans who got the support to get paid players. And investing in the community. All that then paid off in a championship I think we can do the same thing here in Massachusetts the country I know I know you know what is -- that America's greatest but the world. And we respond very well prices are certainly in a crisis now we've got a response."
" I'm deceived the people I talked to who -- consider a mostly intelligent and independent people you know what's annoying them the most of everything right now. In and that really is winning the stimulus money -- court made all these decisions. Has it worked. But on things and I'm gonna create a permanent jobs and then there's a whole bunch of money that has not even Vince mention it it doesn't seem to be a direction our plan. Like you've had to -- And pain when you would tackle a particular."
" As the I think he you know they try to do that it obviously went through a lot of political match nations I think we had to do something. Because for the short term we needed some doubt but my direction and -- go to Washington. Will be to invest this money in infrastructure. In public private partnerships that create. Good paying. Jobs and growth industries and targeted so it creates sustainable does such as the band aids -- that are really wanna get down their site interrogated because. The thing about government from from being working and so many businesses and being involved government is the devil is in the details. And a lot of times we try to do good things in government. But we don't get to be killed right and it creates increased illegal in the wrong direction. So I've really got to get down you know get those plans that we are focusing on infrastructure creation I created jobs. And not be my number one the goal when -- together."
" Steve the last question. And just it just -- my own personal philosophy. Whether it be Massachusetts so whether it be the federal government the debt is staggering. And the clash the cash flows a lousy which. And I think most people understand if you borrow money you gotta pay it back plus interest in the weaken the dollar gets the more we're gonna pay for interest. Having said that. Has anybody have a look at whoever thought. Selling off enough state real estate buildings while federal buildings. So pay off this debt the -- fresh because it's it's definitely in the trillions. Plus the people that worked these properties about selling the technical. I'm talking about a whole bunch of real estate that post op. That they don't that they should know."
" I've not looked it'd be so announces that but I think ETE if you look at the last six recessions. The interesting thing is. The deficit has gone down but in the recovery. Mainly because of job growth of the biggest factor in getting -- the -- does that job growth. And we even have that's surplus appears in the ninety's. We have a really high job growth so -- should be job growth because that an increase income to pay the deficit down. And secondly we have look at all sorts of ways to to raise capital get that -- down. But my fear is that this stimulus and this. Monetary expansion has been the biggest bite by -- three or four times. In terms of any other recession we've had. And therefore it's going to be a very tricky task to exit from that and get that paid back I think we can do -- I think we're great country. And we lead in many many growth industries if we focus on that we'll get a page down and we'll take care --"
" Is your wife. Capping a bunch of taking a big pay cut."
" You know actually she's she's also a bit of public service and and and and work for the work group with the state. So that you think this is the right times I've got my -- that was back in a window without that. And it has been it's been a great spirit that I love. Go around the state and during the people's stories. Knowing I can I can really try to be part of the solution. There's been a great outpouring got a lot of momentum we were in the -- yesterday. It was with it was a great meeting with people down there we Europe and in the in America Merrimack Valley today and Merrimack College. And there was a great outpouring of support so it is it's building I think people hear the message I think -- things the right message. And and I hope I can get elected to like execute on it."
" Steve will you believe it or not of people believe it or not and there was a lot of optimism around the Obama on the Obama administration and and and the new beginning so to speak in the change are you a supporter of the plan that he has in place especially from the stimulus standpoint."
" Yes I am I think I think the President Obama does bring a fact that based approach to government. I personally know many people they're now working with them and and they're bringing -- again a very good fact based approach their bag waiting everything that we should do. You know he inherited terrible terrible. Situation. He's working very hard to fix that situation. So I'm optimistic he'd bring in the right kind of people he got the right goals set but you know -- what happens is there's a lot of hope with the new administration. But you can't move this gigantic. Battleship of America in a few months this is going to be like the Celtics what we -- we -- it we have tried to change the Celtics and three months. And make trades you know you know maybe trade Paul Pierce -- our best player which we never even considered. Many people were screaming and you know -- the vote -- to trade Paul Pierce is one of the best there's an MBA. Because it does this have at a panacea there you gotta be patient we will get this fixed. But it's gonna take some time and we got to give the president the chance -- time I think his his mind and heart in the right place now look at the data support would do that."
" Well all right Steve in a best of luck to -- just hang on 12 is a guy Kevin from Boston's begging to say hello to you he wants to thank you. Good to put Kevin on would you please which you can --"
" Eddie Billy evening I want to -- that you wish Steve -- stands tallest either when they reached down and help somebody below them. I wrote TUU managing pot possession with tickets for Friday evening for the schoolchildren of -- You -- many thought this would generous enough. To give tickets this school children won't even have to do this. An and I just want you know you're not light -- effective as a young school child. Who a lot of them haven't got the financial where all Stevens paid for the train down the Los -- it out and buy ticket to get into the building. This -- here -- the Boston Celtics if you look that one shell to go right rather left. You keep them out against activity criminal activity drugs alcohol is it huge. Last but colleague Steve this year rock we you have to read -- and learn to read with a plays Gwynn and help accusing initiative fossilized. Species are outstanding. And I wish you sincere good luck in your campaign again I want thank you -- Pocket to torrential on solvent and all of them the Celtics for again. Standing tall and reaching down and help those in the community that haven't got any."
" That that's that's really great to hear. As we've said several times in a wig and double a managing partners that. You know we we thought it would it championship we are glad to do that. We knew we -- acting community. And every time when those children have been -- facility. What is the game you know we're trapeze anybody and it's one -- the best things that we can do and will continue doing it try to redouble our efforts. We have are actually shamrock gala October 23. Where -- raise even more money so we can do more things for these kids so totally committed and it's great to hear that spurs on to greater rights."
" Speed the other things to it that I know what on March 12 every ticket that this year brought kits they're gonna give to a woman or man that is in the."
" Sure it's about country."
" And I don't know any -- organization that does -- and on March 12 was to sell pristine we gonna donate all the seats to our men and women that are in uniform. And I I just think it's 101 Michael but all the organizations. In Boston professional that is followed -- I wish you continued success and I again I think -- twelve school children."
" I don't have to ask them Steve who's Kevin's gonna vote for doing. And anyway thanks a lot that Steve let's spend some time with us and any time you would like to c'mon why -- has some questions about the Celtics a Washington you welcome to come."
" It thank you appreciate it have been night."
" Thanks for downloading and listening to this -- subtle with Eddie Andelman come back call for. Boston's talk evolution might be 69 WTKK. Is online and on demand."
